Southern Coalition on Civic Engagement
Recognizing the value of increased cooperation a group of states, consisting of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia, met during the 3rd Congressional Conference on Civic Education and formed the Southern Coalition for Civic Literacy and Engagement. Leaders from the member states developed plans to create a list serve, professional development exchanges, a monthly newsletter, and began to assist Louisiana in reestablishing a Center for Civic Education. In addition to these projects, the idea for a Southern Conference on Civic Literacy and Engagement was born.
